WHEREAS, the willingness of our citizens to give freely and unselfishly of themselves, even their lives, in defense of our democratic principles, gives this great Nation continued strength and vitality; and

 

WHEREAS, from Valley Forge to the Persian Gulf, through war and peace, valiant Americans have answered the call to duty with honor and dignity; and

 

WHEREAS, Americans throughout this great land set aside Memorial Day for special remembrance of the men and women who have died in order to protect our freedom; and

 

WHEREAS, the sound of bugles playing taps will pierce the air at countless ceremonies around the country and at our bases overseas in tribute to those who gave their lives in order to safeguard human liberty; and

 

WHEREAS, on this special day, our hearts and thoughts also turn to those who were disabled while serving their country, and their sacrifices and hardships endure, and daily earn anew the honor and compassion of a grateful nation; and

 

WHEREAS, with a spirit of pride and gratitude, we honor all our veterans, and especially those who have fought on the battlefields of Europe and the beaches of the Pacific, in the jungles and mountains of Asia, in hostile waters and skies around the globe.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and the Cook County Board of Commissioners does hereby recognize May 29, 2000 as Memorial Day and ask that on this day of honor all citizens express their gratitude to all of our veterans; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that we devote special attention to those veterans who died while defending our nation, and show them through our actions that we remember and honor them.

WHEREAS, on June 16, 2000 the La Grange Park Public Library, at 555 North La Grange Road will celebrate its 25th Anniversary; and

 

WHEREAS, the library has planned many special activities to commemorate and celebrate their Silver Anniversary from June 10 - 17, 2000; and

 

WHEREAS, since 1975, the La Grange Park Library originally operating as a bookmobile with books borrowedfrom the Suburban Library System officially opened its new 21,000 square foot facility in 1989; and

 

WHEREAS, the Library is funded through property taxes and donations; the La Grange Park Friends of the Library, a not-for-profit fund raising organization; their annual book sale and a staff of volunteers, who contributed more than 2600 hours this past year; and

 

WHEREAS, the La Grange Park Public Library is proud of the services and creative programs that are now available to residents and visitors; the Web site that provides 24 hour access to information; Internet workstations and training; the Outreach Services; the Talking Book Program and its Homebound Delivery assistance; and

 

WHEREAS, the La Grange Park Public Library is an indispensable asset, that has grown to fulfill and exceed the expectations of the populace as a valuable and essential community resource center.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and Members of the Cook County Board of Commissioners take this opportunity on behalf of the people of Cook County to congratulate the La Grange Park Public Library on its 25th Anniversary; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this text be spread upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body, and a ceremonial copy of same be presented to the La Grange Park Public Library to commemorate this important event.

WHEREAS, the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council (BYNC) is the country’s oldest not-for-profit community organization serving a nine square mile area on Chicago’s Southwest Side, commonly known as the “Back of the Yards”.  This is in reference to the famous Union Stockyards, which for many decades was the heart of America’s meat packing industry; and

 

WHEREAS, prior to 1939 this area was notorious for juvenile delinquency, poor health and housing, and social disorganization, as chronicled in Uptown Sinclair’s famous book The Jungle.  Since then, the BYNC has succeeded in improving the quality of life for residents and businesses, with many of its programs being recognized as models by community groups throughout the country and the world; and

 

WHEREAS, the mission of the BYNC is the same today, as it was over 50 years ago:  to unite all organizations within the community in promoting their general welfare, without regard to race, color or creed.  The BYNC is a delegate agency for the City of Chicago’s Department of Human Services, Housing, and Planning and Development; a State designated Small Business Development Center for the Illinois Department of Commerce and Community Affairs; and the Designated Zone Organization for Illinois Enterprise Zone II; and

 

WHEREAS, Patrick J. Salmon, President and CEO; Mark E. Roschen, Executive Director, Economic Development; and Marina D. Rey, Executive Director, Community Affairs have provided the leadership to make this organization one of the most successful not-for-profit organizations in the county; and

 

WHEREAS, the Community Congress features delegates who participate in the monthly BYNC meetings and cast their votes for the new officers of the Council.  On Wednesday, May 10, 2000, the BYNC’s 62nd Community Congress will be held at the Polonia Banquets, 4604 South Archer Avenue in Chicago, Illinois and will report on community activities, economic development activities and officer election results.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners does hereby recognize the Back of the Yards Neighborhood Council and its leadership and congratulates them in organizing their 62nd Community Congress and wishes them continued success; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this text be spread upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body and that a suitable copy be tendered to Patrick J. Salmon and his staff, as a memento of the honor bestowed upon them on this day.

WHEREAS, the Honorable Mary Ann G. McMorrow, Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court, will be honored by the John Marshall Law School Alumni Association with its “Freedom Award” on May 19, 2000, at the Palmer House Hilton, in recognition of her nearly 25 years as a member of the judiciary; and

 

            WHEREAS, Justice McMorrow was elected a Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County in 1976 and was retained as a Judge of the Circuit Court of Cook County in 1982; and

 

            WHEREAS, Justice McMorrow was assigned by the Illinois Supreme Court to serve on the Illinois Appellate Court in July 1985 and was elected a Justice of the Illinois Appellate Court in 1986; and

 

            WHEREAS, in 1992 Justice McMorrow became the first woman to be elected to the Illinois Supreme Court; and

 

            WHEREAS, prior to joining the judiciary, Justice McMorrow also served as an Assistant State’s Attorney of Cook County; and

 

            WHEREAS, Justice McMorrow is also Chairperson of the Illinois Courts Commission (1999-2000) and a member of the Cook County Judicial Advisory Council (1991-present) and has served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Lawyers’ Trust Fund of Illinois (1999), a member of the Board of Directors of the Illinois Judges Association (1985-1994), Chairperson of the Executive Committee of the Appellate Court of Illinois (1991), and President of the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois (1975-1976); and

 

            WHEREAS, Justice McMorrow has previously been honored with Mundelein Seminary’s “As Those Who Serve” Joseph Cardinal Bernardin Award (1999), Lawrence Hall Youth Services’ “Judge Mary Bertelme Guardian Angel Award” (1999), Phi Alpha Delta International’s 1998 Barbara Jordan Outstanding Public Service Award, the 1998 Myra Bradwell Woman of Achievement Award (the highest award of the Women’s Bar Association of Illinois), the Morris J. Wexler Award of the Illinois Academy of Criminology for Outstanding Contributions to Criminal Justice (1997), the North Suburban Bar Association’s L. Stanford Blustin Public Service Award (1997), the National Advocate Society’s “1995 Woman of the Year Award”, St. Joseph Seminary’s “Rerum Novarum Government Award” (1994), the Chicago Advocates Society’s Award of Merit (1994), the Catholic Lawyers Guild’s “Lawyer of the Year” Award (1993), and many other awards and recognitions; and

 

            WHEREAS, Justice McMorrow, a lifelong resident of the City of Chicago, has also contributed her time and efforts unselfishly on behalf of many civic and professional associations and worthwhile causes; and

 

            WHEREAS, Justice Mary Ann G. McMorrow has been for many years and continues to be a credit to the legal profession, to the judiciary and to the community; and

 

            WHEREAS, this Body takes great pride in recognizing those citizens of this County who are noted for their achievements and contributions.

 

            NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Commissioners of Cook County does hereby congratulate the Honorable Mary Ann G. McMorrow on her receipt of the John Marshall Law School Alumni Association’s “Freedom Award” and wish her continued success in her future endeavors; and

            WHEREAS, Geraldine (“Jerre”) McPartlin will be honored by the Irish-American Labor Coalition, a committee of the AFL-CIO, on May 25, 2000; and

 

            WHEREAS, Jerre McPartlin began her career in the labor movement as a business representative for the School Lunchroom Employees Local 129 of the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employees Union (H.E.R.E.) in 1976; and

 

            WHEREAS, Jerre McPartlin became a Vice-President of Local 1 and a member of the Chicago Federation of Labor’s Executive Board in 1981; and

 

            WHEREAS, in 1985 Jerre McPartlin was elected First Vice-President of the Chicago Federation of Labor; and

 

            WHEREAS, Jerre McPartlin presently serves as Vice-President of H.E.R.E.; and

 

            WHEREAS, Jerre McPartlin is a member of the Coalition of Labor Union Women, the Coalition of School Union Employees, the Coalition of City of Chicago Employees, the CFL Cook County Cooperative Organizing Committee, the Coalition on Public Utilities and the Local School Council of Washburne Trade School; and

 

            WHEREAS, Jerre McPartlin was honored as “Labor Woman of the Year” by the Chicago Federation of Labor in 1995; and

 

WHEREAS, Jerre McPartlin has devoted her time and efforts unselfishly to many worthwhile causes, including Misericordia, Mercy Home for Boys and Girls, Mercy Hospital, Amvets Post #13, and the downtown St. Patrick’s Day Parade Committee; and

 

            WHEREAS, Jerre McPartlin also volunteers and contributes her time and efforts on behalf of her current and past parish churches, St. Celestine, Our Lady Help of Christians, St. Angela and Resurrection; and

 

            WHEREAS, Jerre McPartlin’s late husband, Robert, served in the Illinois General Assembly for 20 years and was a member of Local 9 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; and


 

            WHEREAS, Jerre McPartlin is the proud mother of 12, grandmother of 21, and great-grandmother of 2; and

 

            WHEREAS, Jerre McPartlin has been for many years and continues to be a credit to organized labor and to her community; and

 

            WHEREAS, this Body takes great pride in recognizing those citizens of this County who are noted for their achievements and contributions.

WHEREAS, Father James P. Murphy was born April 24, 1939 in Evanston, Illinois, and raised in Wilmette, Illinois, one of nine boys; and

 

            WHEREAS, Father James P. Murphy attended Quigley North and St. Mary of the Lake Seminary; and

 

WHEREAS, Father James P. Murphy was ordained a priest on April 29, 1965; and

 

            WHEREAS, Father James P. Murphy’s first assignment as a priest was Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Chicago from 1965-1967; and

 

            WHEREAS, Father James P. Murphy was also assigned to St. James Parish in Sauk Village from 1967-1973, St. Mary’s Parish in Des Plaines from 1973-1979, St. Raymond’s in Mt. Prospect from 1979-1984 and St. Eugene’s Parish from 1984-1989; and

 

            WHEREAS, in 1983 Father James P. Murphy was appointed by Cardinal Joseph Bernardin as Agency Director and Chaplain to Chicago Marriage Encounter; and

 

            WHEREAS, since being installed on June 15, 1989 as Pastor of St. Catherine of Laboure parish, Father James P. Murphy has provided invaluable spiritual leadership for his parish community; and

 

            WHEREAS, Father James P. Murphy has been for many years and continues to be a credit to his religious and parish community.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Commissioners of Cook County, Illinois, on behalf of the citizens of Cook County, does hereby congratulate Father James P. Murphy on the occasion of the 35th Anniversary of his ordination as a priest and does hereby express its gratitude and deep appreciation for his many years of service to the community; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this Resolution be tendered to Father James P. Murphy to celebrate his 35th Anniversary of his ordination as a priest in recognition of his good work and public service and also spread upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body.

            WHEREAS, the County Board has learned with sorrow of the death of Bernard (“Benny”) Puchalski, whose career in the labor movement spanned more than 30 years; and

 

            WHEREAS, Mr. Puchalski became an iron worker and a member of Iron Workers Local No. 1 in 1946; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1954 Mr. Puchalski was elected Business Agent of Iron Workers Local No. 1; and

 

WHEREAS, in 1963 Mr. Puchalski was appointed general organizer of the International Association of Bridge, Structural and Ornamental Iron Workers; and

 

            WHEREAS, Mr. Puchalski was also elected President of the Greater Chicago and Vicinity Port Council Maritime Trades Department of the AFL-CIO in 1963, a position which he held for over 30 years; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Puchalski also served as President of the Iron Workers District Council and as Vice-President of the Illinois State AFL-CIO; and

 

            WHEREAS, Mr. Puchalski served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II, attaining the rank of Master Sergeant; and

 

WHEREAS, Mr. Puchalski was also a Golden Gloves Boxer and a professional wrestler; and

 

            WHEREAS, Mr. Puchalski was a leader in the labor movement in this County and State for many years; and

 

            WHEREAS, Mr. Puchalski leaves to cherish his memory three sons, Donald, Richard and Dennis; two daughters, Connie and Bonnie; eight grandchildren, Leah, Clifford, Peter, Matthew, Laura, Thomas, Katie and Jillian and many other family members and friends; and

 

            WHEREAS, Benny Puchalski will be missed by all who knew him.

 

            NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Board of Commissioners of Cook County does hereby express its deep sorrow at the death of Bernard Puchalski, offer its heartfelt sympathy to his family in their hour of sorrow and loneliness, for their loss is shared by all Members of this Body and the people of the County of Cook, and join his family and friends in honoring his memory; and

 

            BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this Resolution be tendered to the family of Bernard Puchalski as a memorial of his good works and also spread upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body.

            WHEREAS, since its founding on August 10, 1959, the Ecuadorian Civic Society has dedicated itself to maintaining the culture, tradition and art of its native country and to providing a gathering place for the Ecuadorian community where they can keep their heritage close to their heart; and

 

WHEREAS, Cook County has one of the largest Ecuadorian populations in the country with nearly 100,000 Ecuadorians constituting a vibrant and hard working community; and

 

WHEREAS, the Ecuadorian Civic Society not only keeps the spirit of the Ecuadorian people alive in Cook County, but also contributes to the health and well being of the people living in Ecuador, raising funds when natural disasters and other tragedies strike; and

 

WHEREAS, the Ecuadorian Civic Society will joyously commemorate the 178th Anniversary of Ecuador’s independence from Spain on Saturday, May 20, 2000 at the Ramada Plaza Hotel where they will crown their new queen amid a dance and show celebration.

 

            NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and Members of the Board of Commissioners extend their best wishes for a memorable and enjoyable celebration of Ecuadorian Independence and recognize the Ecuadorian Civic Society for keeping their heritage alive; and

 

            BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this Resolution be tendered to the Ecuadorian Civic Society and to its President, Mr. Felix Ruiz, in recognition of the society’s efforts to celebrate the vibrant Ecuadorian culture and its contribution of a wealth of tradition for over three decades.

WHEREAS, Almighty God in His infinite wisdom has called from our midst,

 

Samuel Dobbins

Born into time January 13,1943

Passed into eternity May 5, 2000

 

WHEREAS, Samuel Dobbins was the beloved husband and best friend of Ernestine Dobbins; and

 

WHEREAS, Samuel Dobbins was the cherished father and best friend of Angela (Keith) Briggs and Rhonda Dobbins; and

 

WHEREAS, Samuel Dobbins was also the proud grandfather of Autumn Danielle Briggs; and

 

WHEREAS, Samuel Dobbins was appointed Mayor of Glenwood by the Board of Trustees in 1999.  Samuel Dobbins was elected for a third term as a Glenwood Trustee on April 13, 1999, and held the position of Village Trustee in Glenwood since 1991.  Samuel Dobbins was the Trustee Chairperson of the Fire Department Committee, the former Chairperson of the Finance/Administrative, Police Committees, the former Secretary/Treasurer of the Village 911 Board, a member of the Police, Public Works, Economic Development, Cable TV, Flood, License/Building, Park Program Activities and Events Committees and Glenwood Beautification Committee; and

 

WHEREAS, Samuel Dobbins was a graduate of Southern University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science; and

 

WHEREAS, Samuel Dobbins was a member of the Glenwood Lions and also a member of the New Progressive Missionary Baptist Church in Chicago, where he was an usher; and

 

WHEREAS, Samuel Dobbins was a Senior Sales Representative for Boise Cascade Company since 1979; and

 

WHEREAS, Mayor Samuel Dobbins was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him as a dedicated public servant who had always held the best interests of the South Suburbs and the Village of Glenwood.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and Member of the Board of Commissioners of Cook County offers its deepest condolences to the family of Mayor Samuel Dobbins and joins the citizens of the Village of Glenwood in sadness over the loss of an outstanding public servant, one whose life was dedicated to the betterment of his community; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this text be spread In Memoriam on the official proceedings of this Honorable Body, and a suitable copy of same be tendered to the family of Mayor Samuel Dobbins, that his memory be so honored and ever cherished.

WHEREAS in 1990, a group of concerned citizens of the McKinley Park neighborhood on Chicago’s South Side came together to establish a new community organization, the Friends of the McKinley Park Library, and

 

WHEREAS since its formation, the organization has remained true to the vision of its founding members, to maintain an association of persons interested in supporting the Library; to focus attention on the resources available in the Library; to stimulate use of the Library; to receive and encourage gifts to the Library; and to support and cooperate with the Chicago Public Library System in developing improved services and facilities for the community it serves, and

 

WHEREAS over the years, the Friends of the McKinley Park Library has become a model for similar organizations throughout the city, and is today an effective tool for promoting neighborhood pride in one of the most outstanding libraries in Chicago, and

 

WHEREAS the organization has evolved and progressed in response to changing times, with a dedicated core of volunteers who work tirelessly on behalf of the McKinley Park Library, and

 

WHEREAS Friends of the McKinley Park Library is an effective fundraiser for the Library, conducting numerous development campaigns wherein 100% of the income is put to use directly for the benefit of the Library and its patrons, and

 

WHEREAS on Sunday, May 21, 2000, Friends of the McKinley Park Library will host its Decennary Banquet at the Hickory Pit Restaurant, to celebrate ten years of service to the Library and the residents of McKinley Park, and

 

WHEREAS the Decennary Celebration will feature honored guest Wayne Messmer, a noted Chicago sports announcer, motivational speaker, and author, who is best known for his stirring rendition of our National Anthem at Comiskey Park, Wrigley Field, and especially at the late and lamented Chicago Stadium, now

 

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Commissioners of Cook County, that the Board does hereby congratulate the leadership and members of the Friends of the McKinley Park Library on the milestone of 10 years of successful service to the community, and

The Honorable Jane Barnes

Born into time January 4, 1926

Born into eternity May 11, 2000, and

 

WHEREAS Jane M. Barnes (Nee Crowley) was the beloved wife of the late Warren S. “Barney” Barnes, and

 

WHEREAS Jane M. Barnes was the loving mother of Bruce (Sirkku), Samuel (Cathy), Scott, Jeffery and the late Denise, and

 

WHEREAS Jane M. Barnes was the beloved grandmother of Tracy, Samuel, Morgan, Katie, Brendon, Brian and Courtney and the great-grandmother of Emma, and

 

WHEREAS Jane M. Barnes was the dear sister of Harold (Mildred) Crowley, and

 

WHEREAS Jane M. Barnes was born in Chicago, and graduated from Notre Dame High School, and continued her education at St. Xavier University prior to commencing her political career, and

 

WHEREAS Jane M. Barnes was first elected by the people to represent their interests in the Illinois General Assembly in 1975, and was rewarded for her dedicated service by the voters with eight consecutive re-elections, and

 

WHEREAS Representative Barnes was known as a principled and loyal public servant, virtuous of character and thoughtful in her deeds and actions, and

 

WHEREAS Representative Barnes served her constituency and exercised her uncompromising principles through her work on behalf of veterans, senior citizens and children, and

 

WHEREAS Representative Barnes was held by all who knew her an accomplished and active leader, who successfully balanced the demanding roles of mother, career woman, and elected official, to the benefit of her family and her community, now

 

THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED by the Board of Commissioners of Cook County that the Board does hereby offer its deepest condolences and most heartfelt sympathy to the loved ones and many friends of Jane M. Barnes, and joins them in sorrow at this time of loss, and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED that this text be spread upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body, and an official copy of same be tendered to the family of Jane M. Barnes, that her life’s work may be so honored and her memory ever cherished.

Honoring the Academic Accomplishments of River Forest School District 90

and Oak Park River Forest High School District 200

 

WHEREAS, the State of Illinois requires all school districts in the state to participate in the Illinois Standard Achievement Test (ISAT); and

 

WHEREAS, the ISAT compares the academic scores in the areas of reading, writing and mathematics for all students participating in the test; and

 

WHEREAS, School Search, a Kansas City based company, provides relocating families with school information and presents a “Bright A+ Award” to districts scoring in the top 5% of their respective states; and

 

WHEREAS, River Forest School District 90 ranks first in the State of Illinois and was awarded the 1999 Bright A+ Award; and

 

WHEREAS, Oak Park River Forest High School District 200 scored in the top 5% of the state and was also honored with a 1999 Bright A+ Award.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and Member of the Board of Commissioners of Cook County does hereby congratulate River Forest School District 90 and Oak Park River Forest High School District 200 on being recipients of the Bright A+ Award and commend the students, along with the administration, staff, teachers and parents for their commitment to academic excellence; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that copies of this Resolution be tendered for presentation to both School District 90 and School District 200 as evidence of the esteem in which they are held by this Honorable Body and the residents of Cook County.

THE HONORABLE JOSEPH MARIO MORENO, COUNTY COMMISSIONER

 

WHEREAS, The Resurrection Project (TRP) is celebrating its 10th Anniversary on May 24, 2000; and

 

WHEREAS, the mission of The Resurrection Project is to build relationships and challenges people to act on their faith and values to create healthy communities through organizing education and community development; and

 

WHEREAS, The Resurrection Project is an institution based organization of 14 Catholic parishes in the Pilsen Little Village and the Back of the Yards, and includes Holy Trinity, Providence of God, St. Adelbert, St. Puis, St. Procopius, St. Vitus, Assumption, Epiphany, Good Shepherd, Holy Cross/IHM, Our Lady of Tepeyac, St. Agnes, St. Ann and St. Paul parishes; and

 

WHEREAS, The Resurrection Project was founded with an initial investment of $30,000 which it has leveraged into more than $30 million in community investment through the creation of 118 affordable new homes, 77 rental apartments, a new day care center and a Latino construction incubator; and

 

WHEREAS, The Resurrection Project continues to provide innovative family and employment programs through “Eperanza Familiar”, a parenting education program; Supportive Housing which provides housing and comprehensive services to formerly homeless women and their children; and The Resurrection Employment Center which assist local residents in finding quality employment.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Cook County Board of Commissioners honors The Resurrection Project for its 10 years of dedicated service to the community and for enriching the lives of countless families.  The Cook County Board of Commissioners does hereby declares May 24th, The Resurrection Project Day, and celebrates TRP’s mission challenging community residents to act on their faith and values to build a health community; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that this text be spread upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body and that a suitable copy be presented to The Resurrection Project, as a memento of the honor bestowed upon them on this day.

WHEREAS, on May 9, 2000, Sidney L. Port was presented with the Dr. Florenz Ziegfeld Award by Roosevelt University for his unequaled philanthropy to the performing arts; and

 

WHEREAS, Sidney L. Port is a lifelong Chicagoan and loyal city booster whose generosity has benefited numerous arts organizations, universities and medical research centers, including Cook County’s CORE Center; and

 

WHEREAS, Sid Port grew up poor at Clark and Lake Streets in Chicago’s loop in a hotel operated by his parents whose deep sense of social responsibility was passed on to their son; and

 

WHEREAS, Sid Port graduated from Lane Technical High School and played basketball at the University of Illinois where he graduated with an undergraduate degree in 1933.  He later attended DePaul University Law School and received his Juris Doctorate Degree; and

 

WHEREAS, Sid spent many afternoons at the Lawson YMCA on Chicago’s Near North side and learned about the late Victor Lawson, founder of the Chicago Daily News, for whom the Lawson YMCA was named.  Sid Port admired Lawson’s philanthropic activities as well as the way Lawson conducted his business affairs; and

 

WHEREAS, Sid Port entered the automotive parts and distribution industry in 1941 as a purchasing agent and salesman and with a loan from his father-in-law, he founded Lawson Products, Inc. in 1952, naming the company after Victor Lawson; and

 

WHEREAS, over the years, Sid Port never forgot the early lessons learned from his parents and his mentor.  While he successfully built his business, his commitment to philanthropic causes was deepened and ranged from giving scholarships to charitable fund raising, and support for medical research and cultural organizations; and

 

WHEREAS, many have said that “without Sid Port’s help, we could not have made it”, which echoes across Cook County. Sid credits his late wife, Bettie (nee Byron) with introducing him to the world of opera thus perpetuating a tradition of cultural philanthropy; and

 

WHEREAS, in all his charitable activities, Sid Port has provided the element of active personal participation as well as financial support.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the President and Members of the Cook County Board of Commissioners does hereby commend Sidney L. Port for his numerous contributions to humanity in Cook County and across this nation; and

 

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that a suitable copy of this Resolution be provided to Sidney L. Port in appreciation of his goodwill.

James A. Pate

 

who was the beloved husband of Mildred (nee Young); and

 

WHEREAS, James A. Pate was a faithful family man and the devoted father of James, Kurt and Angie; and

 

WHEREAS, James Pate served in the United States Army in Yokohama, Japan during World War II where he was honorably discharged, and he also was an active member of the Hiram Chapter #28 of the Illinois Masonic Temple; and

 

WHEREAS, James Pate was a public servant with the Chicago Transit Authority, Cook County Sheriff’s Office and served on the Board of the Cook County Housing Authority; and

 

WHEREAS, all who knew him will attest that James A. Pate was a kind and caring man, generous in spirit who dearly loved his family and received much love in return.

 

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that this text be spread In Memoriam upon the official proceedings of this Honorable Body, and a suitable copy of the same be provided to the family of James A. Pate, that his memory may be so honored and ever cherished.
